ILP "Design" - Glogster

I designed a poster on the website called "Glogster". Glogster provides templates for different types of posters that can be customized for personal or classroom use. I created a Glog that I could potentially use in the classroom in the future. It specifies a "Classroom Star of the Week" and describes the good accomplishments of the student that is chosen. Here is a link to my Glog!

2) By watching this tutorial, I learned about Visual Thinking strategies and how they are used in the classroom. I learned that this can be an effective method to use with all students, but especially with students that may not have the confidence to answer questions in a normal lesson, such as students with learning disabilities or English language learners. I learned the basic steps of how to use Visual Thinking strategies in the most effective way, and also how it actually ends up helping students in all subject areas.

I think I will use Data Collection tools to interact with both parents and students. I plan on teaching first grade, and I think it will be helpful to use Qualtrics surveys to get info from parents. I could use a survey to see how effective parents think their students are understanding topics and learning in my classroom. I could also use a simpler version of these surveys to ask students about their experience in the classroom and find out what they like and don't like.

The topic I found most interesting from reviewing my classmates blogs was how they want to use technology in their classrooms in the future. Some of them had really cool ideas on how to implement technology we have learned about in a classroom setting. It was also a good way to check out their assignments and see how creative everyone else in the class is.

The next technology-related skill I would like to learn is how to use Photoshop. My knowledge about Photoshop is pretty limited. I think it would be helpful to learn how to use Photoshop so that I can make posters and cool pictures to hang up around my classroom.

I think I will achieve my future educational technology related goals by practicing the skills I already have learned and learning new skills as my education progresses. I will implement technology and lessons on how to use the technology in the classroom.

A flipped classroom is a type of instructional option where activities that would normally be used as homework are used in the classroom, and lectures and lessons are online for the students to learn on their own time after school. This classroom setting is almost the complete opposite of a traditional setting. I think this model of instruction would only work if the students were motivated to put in the work necessary to learn outside of the classroom. The following is a link to a website with educational videos: http://www.khanacademy.com

I have briefly mentioned Teacher Tube before in one of my other blog posts. This web-based resource could help me in my professional development. Not only are there videos on the site that I could use with my students, but there are also videos specifically to help teachers learn and further their knowledge. http://www.teachertube.com

I learned how to make a PowerPoint in a non-linear way through completing the PowerPoint interaction assignment. I previously had not known how to hyperlink slides within a PowerPoint. I liked that I had the freedom to be creative and make my PowerPoint anything I wanted it to be. Next time I can create a different game or make it more instructional. This could be used in my future career as a way to engage students.

I think the technological advancement of the 3D printer holds a big promise in education. The 3D printer can be used to create a variety of tools for students, including specialized tools for special needs students. Also, using a 3D printer to make learning tools is very cost effective and pretty simple.

I am on the side of the digital divide that allows all students, regardless of the technology they have access to, to be given an equal education. I think that assignments outside of the classroom should not be web based or deal with technology, since not all students will have an easy time accessing these resources. The digital divide is something that I will have to be understanding of when I am a teacher. As a teacher I will make sure all technological learning and activities are done in class, and that the homework I give is primarily hand written, this way everyone can do it. If I do need to assign homework on the computer, I will make sure I provide ample time and opportunities for students to use the computers and technology at school so they do not fall behind.

I learned a lot from this PowerPoint assignment. I already knew how to use PowerPoint, however I had never really thought about how I would have to learn to use it to teach students in the future. I didn't really learn anything new, but it did give me good and necessary practice for my future. I also had never really used the speaker notes, but that is something I can definitely see myself using more. I think I can improve it next time by finding new ways to present the information. I think maybe using a different type of list than the one I used would be a good way to do this. In the future I will be creating PowerPoints like this for my students so I thought the assignment was very helpful.

Using Bloom's Taxonomy to support student learning in a particular lesson on powerpoint can be a useful tool. The create step of Blooms' Taxonomy is utilized when you create your powerpoint. The evaluate step is utilized when you evaluate if your student is learning and gauge their information retention. The analyze step is utilized if you depict graphs and charts on the powerpoint that help to enforce the topic. The applying step would be utilized when getting students to apply what they have learned to real world situations, and maybe embedding a video in the powerpoint that depicts this. The understanding step is utilized when you list key bullets on the powerpoint, but give an in depth explanation of each. Lastly, the remembering step is utilized if you include a short quiz or an interactive activity on the last slide of the powerpoint that will help students remember the lesson.

Adaptive technologies are devices such as hearing aids, word processors, braille, etc. They are used to support learners that may have a disability in a certain area and need the extra help. A guy in my high school classes was deaf and used a hearing aid to assist him in learning. The challenges I perceive in using adaptive technologies in my classroom is that they might not always work and then I would have to find other ways to help that student that needs support.

A acquired a lot of new skills from working on the Web Page Design assignment. I had never created a website before so trying to figure out how to make one was a slow but rewarding process. I liked that I had room to be as creative as I wanted and design the website to my own liking. The only thing I didn't like was that I couldn't figure out how to embed a calendar! I think this assignment will help me in my future because it provided me with the basic skills that I need to create a website for my future students and their parents.

I visited a website for Switlik Elementary School. Each teacher had a class page linked to the main website. Most of the class pages publicly showed information such as upcoming events, what the students are learning, and how parents can help their students continue to learn at home. Some of them also included material lists and special programs that the teachers do for their students. I specifically looked at the class pages for first grade students. The picture below depicts one of the class pages I visited.

I envision myself using technology in my classroom to make lessons more efficient and effective. I see myself using a smart board and allowing students to interact with it in order to make my lessons more engaging and interactive for the students. I also see myself using virtual reality in the classroom to take my students on virtual field trips. This would allow my students to explore many places that they might not actually get to go in real life.

Some new skills I acquired from working on the Web Evaluation wiki was how to create a wiki and also how to evaluate web sources. I liked that the wiki was fairly easy to create and after exploring the site for a little bit I had a pretty good grasp on how to use it. I did not like that only one group member could edit the wiki at once. This made it harder to all work on the wiki when it was convenient for us. In the future I can use these skills to create web evaluations for my students and even for myself to use in the classroom.

Blog Post #5

I think that podcasts and blogs are useful Web 2.0 technologies to use in the classroom and support teacher professional development. Podcasts are useful ways to disseminate factual information and engage students without you personally having to give the information. Also, it is a good way for teachers to publish their thoughts if they are interested in particular content and share it with others. I think blogs are useful because they allow for teachers and students to post their ideas in a setting where others can view them and discuss these ideas. I don't think that the Web 2.0 technology of wikis is useful in the classroom. I think this because anyone can change the information on a wiki so it makes it more difficult to review the wikis credibility. A strong computer network and a cloud system that students can log in to is necessary for allowing all students to access these Web 2.0 tools.

The Web 2.0 tool that I chose to explore was TeacherTube. This website, similar to YouTube lets you browse and search for videos. However, the videos on this tool are strictly educational and primarily for classroom use. You can choose to search for a variety of options such as videos, audio, documents, and photos. Once you search for something, a toolbar on the side will appear and you can refine your search even further. The toolbar has an option for each schools subject (Science, math, etc) which is helpful when looking for very specific informational tools. The home page of the site also lets you choose whether you are a student, teacher, or parent, and then tailors the search results to which option you picked.

I gained new skills by working on the concept mapping assignment. I liked that I had the freedom to arrange the information I was given in whatever way I wanted. I had difficulty at first, but I really like how the concept map draws connections between things and shows the information from a more visual perspective. As a visual learner I thought this was really neat. Next time I will take a more creative approach when thinking of how to start the map. In the future I can see myself using this tool to create guides and worksheets for my students.

LAFS.8.RL.1.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text. https://learnzillion.com/lesson_plans/8416-determine-the-central-idea#fndtn-lesson
The website is a lesson plan that gives the option for students to choose if they want a short or long version of the supplemental material. It has videos and tutorials on how to find the theme of a story. I would use it as a homework assignment that my students had to look over.

In the past I have just used google to search for resources by typing in what I was looking for. My methods, while not necessarily technologically advanced, relate to the method in the podcast of using open sources. This information is open to everyone and is predominantly what I used when doing research.

I learned new techniques on how to find sources from the internet. A surprise would be that it was definitely harder than I thought to locate the sources and relate them to and ELA standard. For the webhunt challenge, I challenge you to find these two things: A primary source video on the upcoming presidential election, and a lesson plan that covers the multimedia literacy standard.

Blog post #3

I feel like I am most prepared to teach multimedia literature. I had experience with this standard in my classrooms growing up and I feel like I have a good grasp on it.  I wish I had more preparation for "use multiple sources". While I know how to use multiple sources in my assignments I am not quite sure how to assess if someone else has. I feel like it will take me some time to grasp all the concepts required by the ELA standards.

Based on chapter 9 I think I want to use dropbox with my students. I have had many instances in which my computer crashes and I lose work, so I feel like dropbox would be very beneficial to my students. I think I will need to address appropriate and inappropriate web content with my students. I want to teach elementary school so it is important they are not exposed to anything they shouldn't be.

I acquired the skills to make an effective newsletter that actually looks somewhat appealing. I also learned more useful skills for Microsoft word.  I liked that it is going to help me prepare for when I actually need to make classroom newsletters. I didn't like that it took me a while to complete but that was mostly due to my slow technological skills. I also had a hard time thinking of the topics to include.

Blog Post #2

As a student I have used Microsoft Word to type all my papers and typed assignments. I mostly just used it for essays in high school and in college. I have seen my teachers use it to create assignments as well as disseminate information to us. Now that I know how to use more functions on Microsoft Word, I anticipate myself using it more for assignments as well as personal work.

In my experience as a student, I have had to deal with the copyright and fair use of materials mainly by citing sources in a research paper, or by citing images. I did not really know much about the copyright and fair use laws until I read about them, but I have seen them play into my education to prevent plagiarism. As a teacher I would make sure to cite where I got any published information from and also to find out who created the source I want to use and what steps I need to take to use it. I was also stress to my students that they should always cite their sources.

I have a personal twitter account so I already knew how to use it. However, I never really used the hashtag for anything so I liked how I learned to connect to other is my class with the #FSUedtech hashtag. I like how I can see what others are posting pertaining to the class. In the future I can use this knowledge to connect with other teachers as well as share my own ideas through hashtags on twitter. Twitter would also be a good way to communicate with parents as well as students (if they are old enough to use Twitter)

Computers are an important part of the educational experience because technology is a big part of life nowadays. Using computers in the classroom teaches kids how to properly use them when in and out of school. It can also be important for those who do not have access to computers outside of school as this may be their only way to learn technological skills. Some concerns are that sometimes teachers will have their students use the computers too much and it will take away from actual learning. Another criticism is that cursive is not being taught in some schools anymore due to everything being done on computers. I think that is the most important criticism because I felt like learning cursive was very important in my learning experience and children now should have those same experiences.

I feel like the ISTE standards are not too much to ask, however I also feel like teachers should have the choice of how much and what technology they want to use in their classrooms. One standard that I feel is outside of my current skill set is the 'Design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments' standard. I feel this way because I currently don't know how to design or adapt learning experiences that incorporate digital tools very well.

I do not agree with the label "digital native" for today's youth. Not all children had the privilege of growing up around technology so the term cannot apply to all youth. A digital native refers to someone who grew up in the digital age. The differences I have seen between myself and my teachers use of technology is that some of my older teachers throughout the years were not as proficient in using technology and often had to ask the students for help. I anticipate to have to adapt to whatever technology my future students will be using. Technology is constantly updating so i'm assuming that by the time I am a teacher the youth of America might be using new technology that I do not know much about

I have had pretty basic experiences when it comes to technology. I use a laptop frequently, however I mostly just use the internet or Microsoft Word. I know the basics of power point, but I never learned how to effectively use Excel. I feel confident that I know how to use technology enough to get by in life, but since I want to be a teacher I would like to become more proficient in using technology.
I hope to learn a great deal about using technology in the classroom to teach this semester. I want to be an elementary school teacher and I feel like learning these technological skills would really benefit me. I would like to learn more about how to use Excel since I have limited knowledge about it. I would also like to learn how to use multiple areas of technology together in order to effectively get information disseminated.
By taking the learning styles quiz, I learned that in some areas I am not very particular in how I like to learn, but in other areas I am very particular. I scored a 7 in the sensing learner category which means I prefer ideas and theories to be related to real world concepts in order for me to understand them. I scored a 3 in the sequential category which means that I prefer for information to be presented in a sequential order. It is easier for me to understand the information being given if it is presented like this. I often get confused when information is sporadic or unorganized. I scored a 1 for both active and verbal learning styles. In these categories I only have a slight preference towards learning these ways, but can easily adapt if the information is presented differently.
